VPN and Outlook

By bbowling ·
Hi All,

I have been having a problem for a long time connecting to Outlook when my customers are using a VPN connection. My users are connecting to a Microsoft VPN 2003 Server(it had the same problem using W2K Server). After they are connected using the VPN connection they need to connect to our Exchange 2000 (SP3) Server using Outlook 2000/XP. The connection will time out after a few minutes without making the connection. I have tried to change the MTU(below 1500) size and sometimes they can connect and other times they can not. Any ideas on what I can check? My boss is the main user and he has the most problems.

Thanks,
Bill

I have had similar problems with Outlook users connecting to Exchange via a VPN connection. My problems were DNS related, as the remote computer wasnt part of my Domain. The remote computer could not resolve the server name. I'm pertty sure, that with Outlook 2000, you can substitute the IP in the Services configuration, or you could use a LMHOST file for the Exchange servers your clients need

...or you can edit the hosts file directly and add the hostname/IP of the Exchange server on the client.

Check the configuration for the VPN settings and see whether or not "Use default gateway" is checked/unchecked. At the last company I worked for, we had to configure two seperate connections - one for Exchange, and the other for network shares. Checking that little box and adding the hostname/IP to the hosts file made all the difference in the world.

C:\{WINDOWS}\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
