VPN Connection through Internet (ADSL)

There is no difference between authenticating a through a dial-up connection or through an ADSL line. However, you might have a firewall or proxy server that is controlling access to your internal network on the DSL connection. If so, this could be the source of any problems connecting and authenticating. You need to look more closely at what error messages are appearing on the client side, and whether you see any event messages on your server when someone tries to connect. If there is a firewall or proxy server, you need to check the settings there to make sure they are correctly forwarding packets to your VPN server. Hope this helps!

that's where the problem, the firewall allows the VPN connection, but the server does not authenticate when connecting through ADSL. it does authenticate when we connect VPN through normal dialup.

VPN Connection through Internet (ADSL)

I have heard that some ISPs block the port for VPNs. Although I am able to get my XP VPN to work with my cable provider, I was never able to get a Sonic Wall VPN appliance to work. The ISP was blocking it somehow. So, maybe find out what port numberyou are using, and ask your ISP if that is open on their routers. Good luck on getting a straight answer from the ISP. As I side note, I am paying for a 400bps speed on my cable. When I use VPN to connect to my office, I get 1.5Mbs.
