VPN connections fail after 1 min.

I have a windows XP Pro Computer that connects to the internet when traveling via VPN from Hotels with high speed services. I can connect to my network and connect to my Lotus Notes 5 server and open my mailbox. However, when I try to open mail my VPN times out and shuts the VPN down. According to our engineers the problem is not at the home office. Any ideas?
