VPN Connects But Can't Access Shares

By gordonm ·
I have setup an NT4 Server with RAS & PPTP, SP5 connected to the Internet with DSL. I have a Win98 Client who can connect, login to the domain, and can see the server/computer list in Network Neighbourhood, and can ping computer in the domain usingUNC names, BUT I CAN NOT ACCESS the shares. I have tried mapping a drive letter, using the run command \\servername. At the DOS prompt all computer are listed with Net View, but when I issue NET VIEW \\SERVERNAME I get error 5: Do not have access.

I am confused. Who cannot access the resources, you or the client?
If it's the client dialing in, ask him/her to right click on network neighborhood and map a drive from there. See if he/she still get the error.
You might want to consider a logonscript for your clients, but this is another issue.
If your client has rights to the shares, that is all I can think of.

Good Luck!

When I logon at a client machine, I do not have access to the server shares. I believe it may have something to do with the routing of VPN requests through the non-vpn connection!?!

I am not certain about the answer but I have two thoughts as to possible causes.

The first is the same as that offered by calves above - check to make sure the user has permissions on the share and that they at least have Read permission on the root share (C$).

The other possibility that, for some reason, I think is more likely, is to check the user rights and make sure that the user has the right to "access this computer from network"
(from the server's perspective). While you're in User Manager for Domains, you might just surf through their account settings and make sure everything is properly set.

I am testing the connection using my account which has administrator priviledges on all servers.
