Vpn Error message...new to me.

By MattsDad ·
I recently set up a VPN tunnel using a Watchguard SOHO for remote access to a small WIN2000 network with a DSL connection.

I can connect fine but when I, for instance map a drive and then attempt to use it I get an error message that includes thewords "Network name is no longer available"

Double checked my LMHOSTS file and all is well.

When I research this error at the MS site I find nothing. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi, I am not sure, but I think that your problem may involve two issues. 1. WINS and 2. User accounts.

The first thing you need to check is your VPN connection. The remote computer needs to have a valid WINS server from the same network as theWIN2000 computer. In your VPN connection, find the option for designating the WINS server.

The second item, make certain that you have given the proper 'user' account permissions to the VPN connection and also the network account. Preferably, they should both be the same.

Hope this helps.

I will assume you are also using the provided client that Watchguard provides for the SOHO VPN.

Have you tried mapping using the IP address of the server(\\192.168.111.2\sharename)? If not please attempt this first. Remember, you must have the same workgroup name as the Domain or Workgroup you are attaching to.

I have also found that once you connect, a small wait of 1 to 2 minutes (possibly to allow for master browser updates over the DSL) will allow you to then see the share.

You may also wish to check watchguard's site for any firmware updates to the SOHO.

If you need further assistance, feel free to post.

I would like to say "thanks" to the people who responded.

I resolved this issue by applying Service Pack 3.
