VPN explanation

By zodiac337 ·
I could do with a little help understanding logging onto a Domain over a VPN. I have been left in the lurch looking after an IT department until the new manager starts. I have limited knowledge of this level of networking. I understand how a VPN works and have set this up on the client laptop. There is an icon on the desktop which the user double clicks, authenticates and connects.(This is from the office). What I am trying to get my head round is what happens at the remote location.
I need to explain to the user how to logon to the network.

In theory it should be simple

If it is tried and tested in the office then your user needs to connect to the internet at the other location and try the vpn again, if it is properly configured the VPN will tunnel through the internet connection to your remote computer.

Ok. Thanks for that.
Now, I have only used a VPN on my own laptop logged on locally and then remote onto a machine on the Domain.
Obviously the user will be using a corporate machine, logged on with Domain credentials. Some of the work s on the laptop the rest in the user space on the server. Will the user need to forther logon/authenticate to access the files?
