Problem: router and remote access server won’t allow vpn connections,I think.
Specs: 2 Windows 2000 servers, both running service pack 3. Using active directory default security policy.
Internet: 2 cable modem connections 1 is usinga linksys router this is the gateway for all users. I have followed the linksys knowledge base article on connecting to a vpn server behind a router by adding port assignments.
2nd modem is directly connected to server 2 on a second network card static IP address from ISP.
Background: On server 1 the dual network card configuration worked fine for about 1 month then it stopped no reason. Then several months later it worked again. Then it stopped. I gave up on this and now I need to get it to work again, so I built from scratch another computer as server 2, same arrangement, network card 1 is connected to lan, and the second one is connected to static ip assigned cable modem.
Attemps:I have followed all the help files, books, and websites to set up the ras server. That part works fine and is easy. Once I use the wizard, I remove the router feature, add the dhcp server information to the set up, and try to connect via both xp-pro and win2k clients and all I get is error 800 unable to connect to vpn server my be down or security is preventing you from connecting, I have set the users to have dial-in privledges. I have even set up a new group and put the users into it, then made a new group policy in IAS set to allow connections if in this group.
I have used network monitor and I can see the client trying to connect, but no response from the server. Like its not hearing the request.
I can ping to ip address and I get request timed out, further checking I found that RAS ignores pings. I saw some where how to make it responde, but cant find that information on the web anymore.
Logs show nothing.
