W2K AS desktop icons keep moving

By c_v ·
Frequently (multiple times per day) if I'm writing a new file to my desktop a random icon on the deskop will momentarily disappear, be replaced by the new file that I'm writing, and then approx 30 seconds to a minute later reappear at another spot on the desktop. Machine is W2K AS running SP1, all the hotfixes, and is the only dc in my domain. This is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.

Sounds like something is wrong with your Icon Cache. There is a file on your hard drive called ShellIconCache (no extension) that is designed to remember your icons, their positions, layout, etc. If you delete this file, the computer will build a new one.

Problem is that this file is always locked by the OS so you can never delete it -- even in safe mode. If the partition is FAT32, you can just boot from a DOS floppy and whack it that way. But if it's NTFS, you'll have to use NTFSDOS (a program that can read NTFS partitions from DOS).

Already tried that, I found a similar but not the same issue in the MS Knowledge base that recommended doing that. I deleted the file, rebooted and confirmed the new file creation date and the results are still the same. Thanks for your help, though.
