W2K box can't see NT4 box on the SOHO

By El Guapo ·
I've recently introduced an NT4 Server box in my W2K SOHO network. My W2K Adv Svr box can't see the NT4 Svr box on the network. I've enabled NT4 to use DHCP, and rechecked my scopes and everything. Is there something else I'm missing??

W2K box can't see NT4 box on the SOHO

The primary function of dhcp is assigning ip
addresses to requesting clients.Since dhcp is assigning ip addresses we are assured we in same subnet.Next comes host name resolution,Before i get into resolution, you have an option in your advance properties of
your dhcp server you can tell dhcp to register dns to clients that don't support ddns.If you have wins running enable that option in your dhcp options to point to wins for name resolution. That should resolve naming resolution,if it still does not you can include a static entry on each server either hosts or lmhosts or through dhcp options, also check correct entry on nt4.0 server to dns registration and wins. That should correct your host name resolution, perhaps you can show more light if you are indeed using wins or dns then we can go further,Hope that helps

I'm using WINS & DNS and I've included those in the DHCP options already. There is only one subnet.

I don't know about the name resolution, but the NT4 box can't get an IP from the DHCP.

If you are running win2k in native mode, it will no longer recognize any computer that is not windows2000. If you are still in mixed mode, have you tried putting an entry for the dhcp server into the host and lmhost files in your winnt server? Thesefiles can be edited and you can find them in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
Good luck!

Which server is the DHCP server, and which one is the client, win2k or NT4?

Verify that your client machine is getting an IP address from the dhcp server (ipconfig /all, and check that the dhcp server specified is the correct one).

If not, then try to give the client an IP address that is in the same range as the server, and do a ping test (ping x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the ip address of the server) If this does not work, then check your network card, it may be faulty. try changing it.

when ever u logging into the network is it showing the win2k domain name in logging promt(after pressing ctrl+alt+del)if it is not showing then the nt4.0 is not client for win2k so make it client for win2k then try to logging into the domain server,if it is not showing then add this computer in active directory computers and user then try it, i hope this may solve ur problem
