W2K +sp2 And WIN95 games ;-)

By Stranger in paradise ·
I'm trying to run my WIN98 games (Panzer general) on my W2K pro + SP2 installed.
SP2 includes an "Application Compatibility tool" that is supposed to emulate (?) certain pre-W2K settings.
I'm unable to get my games running on a my laptop so I was forced to setup a dual boot and I would like to get rid of it.
Any sugestions ?

I do believe that Win2k is just not compatible with certain games or apps designed for the FAT system (win9. XP is on its way out and if you can get ahold of a beta, you may want to give that a try.

It's too stupid to keep an OS just to play games ;-)

And since I'm not very keen using the XP product (Activation code).
I regular make changes to my computer, replace CD by DVD-rom, new NIC, repartition Drive (Add/remove O/S).
So I play a lotwith the config and test other stuff, DSL modems, wireless LAN products etc...

So for XP, the Product Activation code would every time to be requested at Microsoft and here in Belgium, the responces are not always so helpfull, you receive a lot of pre-formatted answers from the support dept. 8-(
Thanks for the sugestion but as you could read in my original Q, I already use a kind of boot manager.
I just wanted to get rid of Win98.

Microsoft DirectX?, the programming environment that?s an integral part of Windows 98, was not supported in Windows NT. By incorporating DirectX, Windows 2000 outguns its predecessor and eliminates the need for dual booting. Windows 2000 is therefore able to support considerably more games than Windows NT, without sacrificing any of the latter?s signature stability.

Because Windows 2000 was primarily intended for business use, compatibility testing for business-related software was given toppriority. But this testing phase has passed, and Microsoft is now focusing on your gaming and entertainment needs by increasing support for a wider range of software. Frequently released and completely transparent to the user, Windows 2000 Compatibility Updates are designed to resolve minor compatibility issues for a number of your favorite adrenaline-charging titles. These updates, along with a slew of other useful Windows 2000 updates, are available at the Downloads section of the Windows 2000 home page.

Windows 2000 includes several other features that add punch to your overall gaming experience. With Plug and Play capability, which allows your computer to automatically recognize newly installed equipment at startup, it is easier than ever to get sound and video cards?the gamer?s lifeblood?operational. Windows NT 4.0 lacked native support for Plug and Play devices, which severely limited a gamer?s hardware options.

Check for updates in regards to your game of choice. The updates/patches for games are moving slowly by title. If you send a request to Microsoft in regards to a specific game they may have already put together a patch.

And like I said, there is nothing you can do about it as of yet. Microsoft is working on the issue. There are updates coming out incorporating specific games, but this process will not implement every single title.

By the way I gave you the information you needed. My question should have either been accepted or not rated. I have also been trying to resolve this issue as a fellow gamer and fan of W2k. If you do gain access to any future information please feel free to share as so will I, and if you can find an easy fix. Which I find unlikely or as I should have found it before, I will reimburse you the points you offered for this question in exchange for the tip......
