W2K pro USB root hub listed twice

By zlitocook ·
I have a 1ST mother board 256mem 2 80Gig bios upgraded. Usb devices do not matter because after reloading 2000 and SPs Four I think was the last. I get two listings for the root hub and any thing else I install. The problem is after installing the the first usb device the second or any thing after will not work. There is no mark or event to tell why. The usb is enabled in the Bios and I tried disabling it. I even made a voodoo doll of Bill Gates but it did not work.

This system had the same problem awhile back. And I asked the same thing but the person (my wife:) works for a small company did not try to use any USB devices until a few days ago. Now it is my problem a second time. I flashed the bios, wiped the drive and reinstalled, used everything MS suggested. She needs to use a usb scanner, camera and card reader.

Try the chip-set drivers for the motherboard.

My XP Pro system lists 2 USB root hubs.
This is because my motherboard (like many) has to USB ports in BIOS settings.

1 hub is for the rear panel USB ports.

The other is for the internal header usually used for front panel ports.

If you only use the rear panel ports, you can disable the second USB port in BIOS settings.

If you are using the front panel USB ports, make sure that the connector pin-out matches the header pin-out.
I have seen at least 3 different pin assignments for the USB header.

Finally, many USB devices WILL malfunction if your connect the device before installing the driver.

Have not had time to try this but you seem to know what you talk about. So I am giving you the points, if this dose not work can I still ask you questions about this problem?
