W2KSVR Not sharing printer for MacOS

By SD_Giffin ·
I have a Lexmark Optra R series laser printer which according to Lexmark is supported under MacOS. The problem is W2K Server won't share my printer on AppleTalk even though I have print services for MacOS installed.

So what am I missing here? File sharing works and I can access shared files from the Macs but I can't access the printer and when I try to create an appleshare port for the printer, W2KSvr says there are no appletalk devices available.

So the question is, how do I set this up so that I can print from the Macs to the Lexmark which is currently residing on the W2K Server?

I would suspect that you have not enabled and configured Appletalk on the printer.

Also the spec sheet (from the Lexmark website) mention the following about MacOS support: "Apple Macintosh System 7.5 Operating System or later with Tri-Port Adapter or MarkNet Print Server"

I'm running MacOS 8.1 and having read your suggestion Tim, I tried to configure AppleTalk on the printer but Windows says there are no AppleTalk devices.

Did you install the APPLE TALK PROTOCOL in your W2K Server?. Right click Network Places Icon, clcik Properties, right click Local ARea Connection Icon, Click Properties, Client for Microsoft, Click Install, Highlight Protocol, Click Add, highlight Apple Talk Protocol, click OK.

AppleTalk is installed and the MacOS 8.1 Client is able to see the file shares I have setup. In fact, I have a screenshot showing my Mac configuration posted at http://sdgiffin.csolve.net/seannsimages/mac_os/pict2.jpg - perhaps this might help to diagnose the problem.

Because it is a Quardra (which is a 68K Mac) the highest version of MacOS I can use on it is 8.1 and that limits things in some ways because many MacOS updates I could use either need newer MacOS or PPC or both.

I managed to fix it. It turned out to be an incompatible version of the AppleShare client operating on the Mac. MacOS 8.1 uses AppleShare 3.7 which won't work with the Microsoft Authentication module. After upgrading the AppleShare client, I was able to login using MS Auth v5.0 and print.
