w98 dialup for exchange access w/outlook

By nlittle ·
I have a Windows 98 laptop client that previous to 5/4/02 had no problem dialing up and accessing the exchange server using outlook 98. When connecting with network card, user logs into domain and has no problem with outlook/exchange connection. Withdialup, clicks cancel for logon screen to domain. Then uses dialup through a shiva modem that gets user to network. Gets an error message that there is no domain controller to authenticate user and so some network resources won't be available.Apparently exchange server is one of these! Can get to internet but not to exchange server. User says he changed nothing. Any ideas how to get the boss's laptop working again? If you need more details, please ask.

Sounds like the WINS server IP address was removed from the dial-up properties being used by hte remote user.

Hi,

Just an idea why not check the dial-up on the control panel or reconfigure the dial-up connection with a different or proper IP address. Does this make sense?

It is really the IP address that has the problem over here.

It seems like an IRQ conflict between the dial-up card and Ethernet. The ideal thing to do is to reconfigure both the dial-up and Ethernet but configure the dial-up first. Once this is done reboot the laptop and then it would be easier for Ethernet to use available IRQ number. In most cases Ethernet cards uses IRQ 10 or 15.

Unfortunately the error message doesn't point you in the direction of the conflict it simply says Domain controller cannot be reached. It is up to you to identify the conflict.

This was it. I tried this before I got the answers from all of you great folks! I removed the ethernet card and rebooted - and it worked. There is no reason he needs both of these cards in at the same time. Also, the lmhost/hosts file was back to "new install" status with none of my entries in it. Also fixed this. However, it was definitely removing the ethernet card that fixed the problem.
