W98 Server wont see WXP Pro Client

    Hi,
The network is peer to peer with server pc running w98 (Fat) 4 other pc’s running w98(Fat) as well. Two print servers hp 500 and 300x. I connected a new W XP Pro(NTFS) machine to the network. The c drive will not stay shared. when I try to run the network setup wizaed on the server it gives me a message that it cannot complete the network setup wizard because the wizard cannot find your network hardware.
The server does not see the xp machine in network neighborhood and the xp machine does not see the server. All other pc’s can see the new machine and access the c drive. The new machine can see all other pc’s and access the c drive. Any thought on why the new machine cannot see the server and vise versa?
    Thanks

Does the WIN 98 File Server have Netbui enabled? If you create a user account on the Xp machine equal to the windows network log in on the server can the two see each other?

I installed netbeui and was able to connect the computers. I did this with a user account and without.

All pc’s have netbeui enabled and ipx as well. I also removed netbeui from the server to see if there was a protocol conflict but no change so I reinstalled it. When setting up the user account on the xp machine do I keep it named the same as it is on the w98 server. For example, the w98 server is named server and does not have a password to log onto the network. So do I name the new user server and leave the password blank?

When I set up Peer to Peer networks with profile O.S’s. I have the 9x machine user and password the same which makes it easier when creating the accounts on 2000/xp machines. Also double check workgroup name and spelling, File and print sharing enabled plus windows for workgroups installed and TCP/IP proerties. Problem is most likely typo somewhere.

Create a user account with the same user name and password on XP as on win98. Check the workgroup name and enable File and Print Sharing. You will be able to access XP from W98 box ? if the SAME user name and password (which you used to logon to 98)is present on XP box. Check permissions and shares on XP.
