Wanted: Best Magazne Publishng Software

By richlasan ·
I need help in finding the BEST magazine publishing software out there. By that, I mean the one that incorporates EASE OF USE with flexibility. Preferably a Windows-based software (many people are trying to preach the Apple sermon to me) This magazine I have in mind will involve a lot of pictures.

If you need more options than a home publishing program can serve up, you may want to look at professional-grade software. These allow the most customization, including typography controls and photo manipulation. Experts also say that they are not for the novice. The most well known of these are made by Adobe Systems. Take a look at Adobe InDesign (*est. $700) and Adobe PageMaker (*est. $500).

As a follow up to anna777, quark express seems to be the other software of choice, also not for the fanit of heart. Most places I know use Apples for the desktop publishing. I'm sure there's a reason for it, like the schools are given low priced apples to instruct with. On the flip side apples are very stable just the options to run with seem limitted. Microsoft makes Publisher but as with any other MS product there are quirks and things it will or won't do. It is however a cheaper offer than the more professsional adobe/quark lines and there are places to get training on it. Adobe and quark are King, Quark seems to be more common with the forms portion of the industry. I work in insurance, so thats where I've researched from, on the flip side we use Adobe products. Go figure. Microsoft tends to have problems with pages growing over 32meg in filesize and if you're dealing with detailed pictures then they are not an option!!!
Good Luck!

You asked for the best software for magazine publishing...

Quark Xpress or InDesign are both good choices. The advantage of using Macintosh computers is the Applescript language that helps you automate a lot of processes. If you have to use Windows then Visual Basic may have some of the same functionality but make sure it is supported in the application you chose. You may spend more time keeping it working but then again isn't that what PCs are all about.

Another thing to consider is if you are going to do it all yourself or will you hire people to do the layouts? In the hire employees case, there are more people familiar with Quark Xpress on the Mac. Quark runs the same on both platforms in terms of use but the Mac ends up on top when giving the files to your printer. For one reason or another printer prefer the PostScript generated from Macs. But with practice you should be able to user either platform. PCs will generally be more expensive to keep running while Macs cost more to obtain. Over time the Macs cost less money. But it doesn't seem that way when you first have to put out so much initial money on the purchase.

I would recommend Quark on Mac because:
* Superior Ease of Use
* WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)
* Superior Color Management
* Superior PostScript Support (a must for publishing)
* Longevity (you don't have to replace as often)

But if you are doing it yourself and you aren't going to expand then just get Quark for you PC.
