That’s a rather oldfashioned view. In a CMS (like WordPress) there isn’t a clear difference, since more often than not it’s done by one and the same person.

How about the following definition for a transaction oriented app or website: development is about the backend, design is about the frontend.

The Differences Between Web Design and Web Development

      by yusufonkk ·

In reply to Web Design vs Web Development: Main Differences?

Website developers are not responsible for creating assets. Web developers are responsible for taking the designs created by web designers and turning them into a functional website. This includes coding the website, setting up the hosting, and making sure that the website is accessible to users.

Here are the main differences between web design and web development:

      * **Web design** is the process of creating the visual elements of a website, such as the layout, colors, fonts, and images. Web designers use software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create these elements.
      * **Web development** is the process of creating the underlying code that makes a website work. Web developers use programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the code.

**Website designers are not responsible for writing code.** Web designers may have some basic knowledge of coding, but they are not expected to be able to write complex code. This is the responsibility of web developers.

**You’ll usually pay less for web design vs web development.** Web design is generally less expensive than web development because it requires less technical expertise. However, it is important to note that the cost of web design can vary depending on the complexity of the project.

**Website development seeks to add functionality to the site; website design aims to add aesthetic appeal.** Web development is all about creating a website that works. This includes making sure that the website is easy to use, that it is accessible to users with disabilities, and that it is secure. Web design is all about making a website look good. This includes choosing the right colors, fonts, and images, and creating a layout that is both visually appealing and easy to navigate.

In short, web designers and web developers are two different roles with different skill sets. Web designers are responsible for the visual elements of a website, while web developers are responsible for the underlying code. Both roles are essential for creating a successful website.

      1) Not sure exactly what you mean by assets, but I would say that developers are responsible for creating(coding) everything on the website
      2) They are not, they are creating templates/plans/projects and forward them to developers to write the code under their specifications. However, designers should also understand the basics of coding not to create unreasonable/impossibe solutions
      3) It depends, but for the most parts yes. Complex websites that takes thousands of hours to code will be the case, but I can imagine a very simple website from the backend, but with tons of effort put into planning it
      4) Both functionality and aesthetics are determined by designers, but developers are the one’s that create the code and make it work

While web design and web development have their distinct focuses, it’s important to note that many professionals possess skills in both areas, especially in smaller projects or in collaborative environments. Effective web development often incorporates considerations for design, and vice versa, to create visually appealing and functional websites.

Web design and web development are closely related but distinct fields that play different roles in creating a website. Here are the main differences between web design and web development:

      Web Design:

Focus: Web design primarily deals with the visual aspects and user experience (UX) of a website. It focuses on creating an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly interface.
Skills: Web designers typically have expertise in graphic design, typography, color theory, and layout design. They use tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, or Figma to create visual mockups and wireframes.
Tasks: Web designers are responsible for creating the overall look and feel of a website. They design the user interface (UI), including the placement of elements, navigation menus, buttons, and other visual components. They also consider factors like branding, color schemes, and the overall user flow.
Technologies: While web designers should have a basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, their primary focus is on design-related tools and software. They may use front-end frameworks like Bootstrap or Foundation to implement their designs.
      Web Development:

Focus: Web development involves the coding and programming required to build a website. It focuses on functionality, interactivity, and data handling.
Skills: Web developers are proficient in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and may have expertise in back-end languages like Python, PHP, or Ruby. They use development tools, text editors, and IDEs to write code and build websites.
Tasks: Web developers take the design created by web designers and translate it into a functional website. They handle tasks like writing HTML markup, styling the website with CSS, implementing interactivity with JavaScript, integrating databases, and managing server-side processes.
Technologies: Web developers work with a wide range of technologies depending on their specialization. They may use frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js for front-end development. Back-end developers may work with frameworks like Django, Ruby on Rails, or Laravel.
Overall, web design focuses on the visual and user experience aspects of a website, while web development focuses on coding and building the functional elements. However, there is often overlap, and many professionals possess skills in both areas to create well-rounded websites.

Web design and web development are two distinct disciplines that are closely related but have different focuses and skill sets. Here are the main differences between web design and web development:

Objective: Web design primarily focuses on a website’s aesthetics and user experience. It involves creating visually appealing layouts, choosing colors, typography, and graphics, and designing the overall look and feel of the website. Web development, on the other hand, is concerned with the technical implementation and functionality of the website. It involves writing code, building web applications, and integrating various components to make the website functional.

Skills Required: Web design requires skills in graphic design, typography, color theory, user experience (UX) design, and prototyping tools like Adobe Photoshop, Sketch, or Figma. Web designers should have a good understanding of usability principles and be able to create intuitive and engaging user interfaces. On the other hand, web development requires proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as frameworks, libraries, and tools specific to web development, such as React, Angular, or Node.js.

Responsibilities: Web designers create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to visualize the website’s layout and user interface. They work on navigation menus, buttons, icons, and overall visual design. On the other hand, web developers focus on turning the design into a functional website by writing code. They handle server-side and client-side programming, database management, and web server configuration to ensure the website works as intended.

Collaboration: Web designers often work closely with clients, stakeholders, or marketing teams to understand the website’s purpose, target audience, and branding requirements. They collaborate with web developers to ensure the design is implemented accurately. Web developers work closely with web designers to understand and translate the design specifications into functional code. They may also collaborate with backend developers, database administrators, or system administrators to integrate different website components.

Timeframe and Iteration: Web design is usually an earlier stage in website development and focuses on creating the visual concept. It can involve multiple iterations and revisions based on feedback.
