web designer re entering field

By ron ·
I have 4 years experience in web design but have been out of it for a little over a year.

My question what have I missed what are the most desirable skills to have as a web designer now?

At present the unfortunate trend is the Jack Of All Trades person. Because companies usually have no budget for designer and programmers recently they are expecting us to do both. A typical job today might require PhotoShop, Illustrator, HTML, DHTML, Flash, ASP, XML, PHP, and on and on. Suits apparently don't see the difference between designers and programmers so you really have to have a good understanding of everything that's out there at the time plus the ability to research and learn new languages and software.

So either pick a couple of things and just be a genius at them. OR have a handle on everything that your potential employers are using.

Sorry for the very tardy reply, I just started back on last week.

But I think the biggest trend I'm seeing is just how firmly entrenched XML has become. It's everywhere--syndication (RSS), page delivery (XSLT, config files, etc.), page markup. You probably had some XML exposure from your previous life but definitely having solid knowledge is helpful.
