Web mail - how do you access? What security concerns do you have?

By burtonizer ·
How many of you have web email access for your employees?

For those of you who do, do you allow access via only userid and password?

Do you have/or plan to adopt a multi-factor authentication solution for accessing web email?

FYI, we are deploying a software token on the new laptops we are rolling out this year to improve our remote access security. The question has come up about whether we need to also secure our web email solution for when employees access it via their home computers. We could issue hardware tokens for this purpose, but we're not sure the risk is worth it.

What are all of you doing?

SSL VPN through to Outlook Web Access. Remember no system is 100% secure - all depends on budget at the end of the day.

We use SSL VPN also, however.......

Web mail is used primarily by our employees who do not have a company issued laptop - therefore, they cannot utilize SSLVPN to get into the network (which would allow them to check their actual mailbox versus webmail).

As an aside, we do use Lotus Notes - web mail is called iNotes.

Thank you for your reply!!

Our SSL-VPN is very secure allowing only those on company approved devices (laptops with our updated anti-virus program) can attach and login to our network. Therefore, a user wanting to check their work email from their home computer, or any other non-company owned device, cannot use SSLVPN to get into our network.

RSA token thru VPN only

by IT cowgirl In reply to Web mail - how do you acc ...

Employees must first VPN into the system (or via network connection from another company office) with their RSA token and password account.

Then they can get to the work network and use OWA, only accessible via the work network.

If I had a team of people with this type of experience, I wouldnt need to worry about security, they could.
