Weird Exchange issue.

By CB admin ·
I'm experiencing a weird issue with my Exchange server, with the following specs;

Windows 2000, sp4 (although it also happened with SP3)
Exchange 2000, sp3
2GB RAM
Active Directory is installed, using DNS and WINS on primary domain controller, which Exchange is using for DNS.

I don't restart my servers often, and the problem is that when I do restart them, my Exchange server resends old messages again. Messages that were sent weeks or even months ago, the problem is ramdom and from random users from ramdom dates. It's happened a few times already and would like to know if anyone has experienced this and if so, what can I do to fix this.

Many thanks in advance.

I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on an NT 4 sp6a server and have seen something similar from time to time with certain messages.

In my case, it has something to do with the spooler service producing a duplicate message. Exchange delivers one copy of the email to the user and retains a copy in the directory exchange\imcdata\in. I'm not sure if your directory structure or this would apply with Exchange 2000 or in your environment.

The messages in that directory are retained until you delete them. Maybe when you restart your server it retries sending those messages in that directory.
