Start off by entering the BIOS

by OH Smeg In reply to weird messages when i boo ...

And setting it to the Performance Default Option. You may need to also go to the Boot Order and remove Boot From a Network Connection from the list as well. Don't forget to save the changes as you exit the BIOS or you'll have to repeat the process again.

As for the Booting from the CD you should test the HDD with it's Makers Testing Utility for correct Function the Utility is available from here just click on the Drive Makers Name

The MAC address is because the computer is looking for a Network Connection to source Boot Files from the Boot by CD is most likely because the Primary Files needed to Boot the system with are not present and have been stored at the Network Address it is looking for.

You may be required to do a Repair Install of XP after you have changed the BIOS.

So that you can repair the install and have it look to the HDD for the primary Boot Files.

The MAC Address issue is about the BIOS not the Software

by OH Smeg In reply to re

So you need to open the BIOS which will be on the Splash Screen or POST Screen and will tell you to push F2, F10 or Delete or something else. When you do this navigate to the Boot Order and the Boot From Network needs to be moved tot he Last option or disabled.

Depending on the computer this will be shown on the actual screen and remember to Save the changes as you exit the BIOS.

By returning it to Performance Defaults

by OH Smeg In reply to hmm

You are doing this. Sometimes a BIOS gets messed up by a CMOS Battery going flat or some Firmware Flash can mess up the BIOS Settings as a side effect or whatever was flashed.

It's not supposed to happen but unfortunately it does. The other option is to Clear the BIOS if that is available on your system and then on the first boot open the BIOS and set the Date & Time save the changes when you exit and then allow the system to just boot.

However from my experience quite a few ASUS M'Boards will default to a Booting from a Network Device and spit up the MAC Address.
