Weird number on my cell phone

By ITgirli ·
Due to popular request, I am moving this issue from Q&A to the discussions.

The other day I looked at my cell phone and it said I had a missed call. When I displayed the number, it showed up as "1 234 567 890". There was no voicemail left on my phone.

Does anyone have any idea why this may have happened?

Telemarketer or bill collector!
Yep I have many of those numbers on my caller ID at home.
Well of course all from telemarketers not bill collectors in my case -)

not that way in Michigan

by jdclyde In reply to Yep

all collectors/Helemarketers always come up as "not available" or "out of area".

Yes, after the ex-wife moved out and stopped paying her bills, I get LOTS of collectors calling.

After my house is sold and I move, my next number will be unlisted!

No idea about your number Girli, except for I heard on the radio they can now SPOOF caller ID.

Newest fad

Your right JD. I read that somewhere actually. You can now buy a piece of hardware that when you use it asks you for what number you want to appear to be calling from.

So now there is telephone "spoofing". Guess folks found a way to get around call blocker.

It isn't that expensive either. It's going to make me not want to answer my phone.

The BAD thing is

by jdclyde In reply to Newest fad

that it is PERFECTLY legal.

You can give harrassing calls and make it look like someone else is the one doing it.

That is the case I heard, where the calls appeared to be coming from a senators office.

I have received several of these numbers. Its gotten to the point of where I no longer say hello when I see a number I dont recognize, I scream vulgar phrases at them. Hey if they really need to speak to me then they will call back at a number I know.

Hello real quick

by Dr Dij In reply to

then hang up quick if no one answers immediately. you can avoid great majority of spallers (spam-callers?) this way.

they use predictive dialers that dial more numbers than they can answer because they know not all phoens will answer with a person or at all.

there is a delay of a few seconds between the dialer hardware recognizing that a person asnwered and the call being xferred to an operator.

only problem

by jdclyde In reply to I'm told you can block

for my home phone, I don't pay extra NOW to see who I will be talking too before I talk to them.

cut my phone bill in half by getting all the extra crap off it.

May look into an internet phone soon.

Another problem this is bringing up is

by Old Guy In reply to I'm told you can block

as I understand according to the articles listed in here they are able to have a different phone show up in your caller ID. In other words if they were to know your bank's name, or some other phone number to a legit business that you would recognize they could have that number show up on your caller ID. I think it would open more people to being caught in a scam.
