What are the hottest certifications

By darius_siliunas ·
I was wondering what the most sought after certifications are and what is the quickest way to achieve them? Boot camps? Classroom? Self study?

If your trying to break into IT

by LordInfidel In reply to What are the hottest cert ...

That is not the best course of action.

Cert Hunting that is.

Everyone has their own learning style.

Although I live by the doctrine that in order to succeed in IT you have to be able to teach yourself. If you can't teach yourself, then youwill not be able to solve problems that you have never seen before. And you will be forever stuck in help desk.

I wouldn't concern myself with what the "hottest certs" are. Because if you can't back up the cert with knowledge, then having it ispointless.

Just kidding, that really does soind great though, in the sense that I learned to teach myself in the heat of battle, but it really is SOUND advice to give the newbies...

Correcto Mundo!

Certs w/o ANYTHING else (particularly experience) is worth the same as a wooden nickel.

Actually, I think I read a fair amount on our industry (IT) and for long time now, the cert "thing" has been dying down. I think its the economy, making IT Directors/CIOs realize that they need to hire the skills and not the paper.

Case in point: there is a supposedly "extremely" skilled PC tech looking to interview with me for a job. He's bragged repeatedly about him having A+ cert and Network+ cert. So I give this guy a simple test (and believe me it was VERY simple for a "professional" IT support person)....out of 10 questions, he got 5 wrong!

50%!!! The questions were simple things like how to install a raid controller, SCSI drive, what's the first thing you check when a user complains that their monitor is black, etc.

Anybody knows that! Replace the monitor! He must have been an idiot!

Whats the first thing you check

by comptek In reply to

Before replacing the monitor check to see if it is plugged in!!!! If it is then check to see if it is turned on (any lites) and then check the monitors brightness. When I was in school, a bunch of us decided to play a prank and dimmed all of the monitors in the lab on april fools, and belive it or not a bunch of the students were swapping monitors and checking video cards, before they even checked the power. We fixed the problem and demonstrated that "Dont assume anything" it was pretty good.
