What specific steps can I take to optimize my Windows system for better performance? I’m experiencing slow response times, lag when opening applications, and general sluggishness. I would like detailed guidance on each step, including how to uninstall unnecessary programs, manage startup items, clean up disk space, adjust visual effects, update drivers, and any other relevant actions that can help improve my system’s speed and efficiency.

With such issues and this long list of things you want to know, I’d suggest 4 steps:

      1. Tell us details about the hardware of your machine (how old; HDD or SSD, how big, how full; how much RAM; what CPU) and what version of Windows you run.
      2. Do a clean install of Windows including formatting the disk (first make a backup of the data you don’t want to lose). No need to uninstall unnecessary program and clean up disk space. Download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturers site.
      3. Google how to manage startup items (in task manager for current versions of Windows) and services and how to adjust visual effects in the settings app or config panel, and do that.
      4. Install the latest versions of only the programs you need, and restore your data from the backup.

      Hi, hazel4

To optimize your Windows system for better performance, you can follow these steps:

Uninstall Unnecessary Programs: Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, find programs you don’t use, and select Uninstall.
Manage Startup Items: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Startup tab, and disable items with high impact that you don’t need on startup.
Clean Up Disk Space: Use Disk Cleanup (type it in the Start menu) to remove temporary files and unnecessary system files.
Adjust Visual Effects: Right-click This PC > Properties > Advanced system settings, and in Performance Settings, choose Adjust for best performance.
Update Drivers: Use Device Manager to find and update drivers, especially for graphics and storage devices.
Check for Malware: Run a full scan with Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus.
Windows Updates: Ensure your system is up to date in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Following these steps can improve responsiveness and reduce lag.
