What can be done to speed up Win2KPro?

By william.cannon ·
I have recently upgraded from NT 4.0 workstation to Win2KPro. The Win2KPro seems to hang when I try to access any network drive or other resource. Is there a method to speed up the process. The network I am attached to is WinNt 4.0 server based withstatic IP addresses.

I have found the same problem going from my Win2k workstation to a Novell server. But, I did see a differance when I did a clean install of Win2k and not the upgrade. Other than that, just make sure that there is clean connection between the two (i.e. switches running at 100 etc.)

First, I am gonna assume there are no network bandwidth bottlenecks going on. Good speed on the NICs (100mb), fast switch on the back end (also set for full duplex 100mb), and nothing else on the segment is stealing the bandwidth.

Ok, 2KPro uses DNS by default for all name resolution queries, including trying to get to a network share. Pro will use WINS/LMHOSTS file for resolution, but only after it goes the DNS route.
The name resolution order is (if I remember it right!) DNS, HOSTS file, WINS, LMHOSTS, broadcast.
So, I would make sure you do have a WINS server running, and your 2KPro is configured to use it.
Sounds like your current domain network is all NT4. NT doesn't use DNS for machine name resolution.

Hope this helps.
