What certifications should I go after?

By comptek ·
I am new to the IT field and I am wondering what route I should take in order to receive certification. Right now I am in the process of obtaining my A+ cert but what should I go after next? I was thinking about MCSE but I have no networking experience and I was not sure if the MCSE track would teach me the "Essentials" like Network+ would. I want a stable background and I am not in a rush to achieve MCSE. I talked to an instructor and he had told me that I would be wasting my time going after Network+ if I planned on getting my MCSE. Is that true? My plan was this: A+, Network+, Security+. I thought that by staying vendor neutral I should be ok. Any suggestions please let me know.

MCSA

I would look at MCSA first. You can use your A+ or a Network+ cert towards an elective, then you only have to take 3 core exams to earn an MCSA. This way you have two credited certs, and you can this as a building block to the MCSE, and you have one or two "vendor neutral" backgrounds as well. Just a thought... Good luck!!

My advice

by grommitsteed In reply to What certifications shoul ...

Comp TIA'S A+ is a very good platform from which to build your skills around. Also the N+ exam is in my opinion an essential part to understanding the various standards and topologies involved in networking. Although parts of these certifications may seem out dated a lot of it is extremely useful. Yes you could go straight ahead with various MCP?s working towards the MCSE but without a basic knowledge being there it will seem all the harder.
My advice would be to complete the A+ N+ and gain some practical experience before attempting any of the MCP?s it not only will stop you from trying to cram to much info in your head it will also help you to decide on a career plan an how you are going to go about it.
Hope it all goes well, if you need help with anything I don?t mind being contacted you may be able to help me one day.
Regards
Mike

I advise to look at the Network+ or Server+ Exam, than looks to the MCSA 2000 or 2003 track.
