What is a good laptop to get for university?

    by delawen ·

I am trying to choose a laptop to get for university and am not sure what I can realistically get. I will be using it for media consumption, light gaming, and university work. Since I am going into engineering, this may include some programming, simulating, and 3D modelling.

Here is a list of features that I would like the laptop to have:

    price: $1500 (AUD)
screen: 60Hz 1080p IPS or better
    specs: 16gb ram, ryzen 7 3750H or i7 9750H, Nvidia 1650 or better
    battery life: 6hrs or better
    weight: less than 5lbs
    size: 14-15.6 inch
    capacity: 512gb ssd or better
    build quality: high
nice to haves: pen and touch support, I’d also rather it not look too “gamer”

Does anyone know of anything that would fit my criteria?

Most webshops (assuming you want to buy it online) have good search functions that let you enter selection criteria. Or try review sites like our sister company cnet offers: https://www.cnet.com/topics/laptops/products/ and https://www.cnet.com/news/best-laptop-for-2020-dell-hp-microsoft-apple-acer-lenovo-and-more/

Once you have a shortlist, post with that.

I’ve never found such that met all those specs.

I’m guessing you’ll have to compromise on some of the specs or price.

I really like my old Asus ROG and Acer Predators. I have learned to dismiss the idea that it shouldn’t be a gamer laptop since that’s where the power for the price happens.

for me top 3 laptops around 1500$ to use as a student are:

      1. LG Gram Laptop 17Inch IPS WQXGA 2560 x 1600 Intel 10th Gen Core i7 1065G7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD 512GB x2, 17 Hour Battery, Thunderbolt 3 17Z90N 202 https://amzn.to/3mDFiEl
I find it elegant and reliable
2.Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 14″ https://amzn.to/3aBcUjZ is super easy to work with especially if you take it a lot on you, because it is light you can easily take it anywhere and i think it has the most power per weight https://amzn.to/3aBcUjZ
      3. ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 14″ VR Ready 120Hzhttps://amzn.to/37HsKYD
A gaming laptop that doesn’t scream GAMING everywhere, with its humble design and top tier performance for the cost it’s one of the best choices out there now https://amzn.to/37HsKYD

If anybody has any other ideas I would like to see them, also keep me updated of your last dessition 🙂

3D modelling is a heavy work so you may need a gaming laptop such as Acer ConceptD 7 , Gigabyte Aero 15x , Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model .

General thin and light notebooks cannot dissipate heat , and will reduce the CPU frequency。

Buy any laptop that has 8 gb of ram with i5 processor atleast along with SSD. Any laptop that has this much specifications minimum would be good enough for your iniversity work.
