One of the biggest advantages of VHDX compared with the legacy VHD format is virtual disk storage capacity. Before Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V virtual hard disks had a 2 TB limit. VHDX files have a 64 TB capacity. Hyper-V allows you to create 2 primary hard disk storage types, fixed or dynamic.

      The differences are as follows:
      1. The maximum capacity of VHD and VHDX is different.
Prior to Windows Server 2012, the maximum capacity limit for VHD virtual hard disks was 2TB. VHDX can reach up to 64TB.
2, VHDX is optimized for VHD performance
The advantages of VHDX are not limited to capacity improvements. The VHDX 4KB size logical area size helps improve performance compared to VHD files.
      3, VHDX file self-protection function
By continuously monitoring metadata updates, VHDX also provides file error protection in the event of a sudden power outage, which is not available in the VHD format. Providing larger file blocks for dynamic and differential disks and storing custom metadata features are the differences between VHD and VHDX.

A file with the VHDX file extension is a Windows 8 Virtual Hard Drive file. It acts as a real, physical hard drive but is stored in a single file that’s located on a physical disk like a hard drive. One can be created from scratch or from backup software like Disk2vhd.

Virtual hard disk (VHD) is a disk image fileformat for storing the complete contents of a hard drive. The disk image, sometimes called a virtual machine, replicates an existing hard drive and includes all data and structural elements. It can be stored anywhere the physical host can access.
