What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Lockedby bryanwaltersmn · about 7 years, 10 months ago
Tags: Cloud
While reviewing some technology blogs have landed up on a discussion where a technology expert said that many hosting providers fake about their services and they offer virtualization options to existing hosting packages and call it as Cloud. which create the misconception about Cloud.
I would really like to know what are the key factors that differentiate Virtualization from Cloud technology?

Cloud computing is the delivery of shared computing resources, software or data as a service and on-demand through the Internet.” Most of the confusion occurs because virtualization and cloud computing work together to provide different types of services, as is the case with private clouds.
The fact that “the cloud” may well be the most overused buzzword since “web 2.0” notwithstanding; the two are remarkably similar in both form and function. What’s more, since they so often work together, it’s quite common for people to see clouds where there are none -

In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Virtualization is done on a small scale. the virtualization acts as the base for cloud computing and helps deliver on the value of cloud computing. With virtualization, we can create virtual machines, scale virtual machines up/down via manual processes without service disruption.
Cloud computing is accessed through the internet and can make use of virtualization. Certain operating systems, hardware systems, and even application clusters, deliver cloud services. Cloud computing is nothing but delivery of computing resources, data and storage resources as a service to end users over a network.

The main difference is that cloud computing is a reference to specific kinds of vendor-provided network setups, virtualization is the more general process of replacing tangible devices.

Yes of course it is an issue, if some hosting provider is faking about the technology he is been providing to you and you are paying him **** lot of money every year.

Nice, clarification. Now I want to know, how a customer can identify whether his hosting provider is actually providing him a cloud solution or not?

In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Virtualization is a simple process in which software is used to simulate hardware. It can exist without the cloud. But cloud computing cannot exist without virtualization. Cloud computing allows businesses to store and access applications and data on virtual servers, rather than in a physical machine.

The term virtualization refers to a process used to create a virtual environment.
Virtualization allows a user to run multiple operating systems on one computer simultaneously. It is like getting multiple servers for each physical server you buy.
It is creation of virtual (rather than actual) version of something such as an operating system, a desktop, a server or network resources, etc.
The technology behind virtualization is known as virtual machine monitor (VMM) or virtual manager. Virtualization is also known as the backbone of cloud computing. The term cloud computing has become a buzzword in the tech industry, which refers to automated control, built on top of a virtualized infrastructure consisting of storage, compute and network components.
Cloud computing gives your company access to complex applications and computing resources via the Internet.
Virtualization manipulates hardware and cloud computing manipulates the result.
It is the delivery of shared computing resources, software or data as a service (SaaS) on-demand through the Internet.

Virtualization Vs Cloud
by jessenickol · about 6 years, 5 months ago
In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
There are two ways to answer this – one about the concept and the technology and second about the way these technologies are being used in the real world to solve similar problems.
1. The technologies at a high level
Virtualization is about taking a physical device and breaking it down into smaller pieces that can be provisioned, shared, moved, etc. thus making resources more efficient and more dynamic.
Cloud is about making IT resources (virtualized usually) available on-demand, with a pay-as-you-go, model, accessible via an API (a software program can access, create, configure, etc. virtual resources)
2. About how they are used to solve IT problems
While similar in the technology they use (most cloud solutions rely heavily on virtualization technology), they are two solutions to two different problems
Virtualization is about resource optimization. Large IT departments had hundreds of applications running on old hardware, so they had to manage hundreds of old servers too. Virtualization served like an app Tetris, where multiple applications, sometimes hundreds, could run on one physical server. This resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of physical servers that have to be managed, resulting in performance, cost, and energy consumption savings plus time and effort saved by keeping these old servers running.
Virtualization has evolved since, allowing replication of virtual machines, moving machines across servers, etc. however, the fundamental concept is still the same: administrators move apps between servers in this Tetris game.
With the cloud, infrastructure is completely transparent. A cloud creates a pool of IT resources (compute power, storage, networking, etc.) and makes it available to customers on demand. A user requests resources that are provisioned immediately and the user has no concept of the underlying hardware other than what is the capacity allocated to him or her.
The real power of cloud comes from the automation made possible by creating applications that are smart enough to control the infrastructure resources they need via an API.
With virtualization, an application that needs scaling usually gets a bigger Tetris brick: the virtual server gets larger (but is still limited to the total physical server capacity).
With cloud, an application can scale vertically by resizing the server to a larger one, but it can also scale horizontally – creating more servers in a cluster as the application requires, across

Difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
by tejas_ambekar · about 5 years, 11 months ago
In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Virtualisation is the process of creating multiple virtual environments on a single server. It does this by using virtualization software, known as a virtual machine monitor (VMM) which separatess compute environments from the physical hardware – this makes it possible to run several operating systems on one computer at the same time. In other words, virtualisation allows you to have several virtual servers for every physical server you buy.
The confusion with cloud comes from the fact that cloud computing uses virtualisation. In a cloud data centre, the large numbers of servers are virtually partitioned, but it is not the virtualisation that makes the cloud. Instead, we should think of cloud as the delivery of shared computing resources, software or data as a service (SaaS) via the Internet. Cloud computing, therefore, allows businesses online access to complex applications and enormous computing resources as well as providing elasticity, scalability and automated management on a pay-per- use basis.

In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Essentially, virtualization differs from cloud computing because virtualization is software that manipulates hardware, while cloud computing refers to a service that results from that manipulation.
“Virtualization is a foundational element of cloud computing and helps deliver on the value of cloud computing,” Adams said. “Cloud computing is the delivery of shared computing resources, software or data — as a service and on-demand through the Internet.”
Most of the confusion occurs because virtualization and cloud computing work together to provide different types of services, as is the case with private clouds.
The cloud can, and most often does, include virtualization products to deliver the compute service, said Rick Philips, vice president of compute solutions at IT firm Weidenhammer. “The difference is that a true cloud provides self-service capability, elasticity, automated management, scalability and pay-as you go service that is not inherent in virtualization.”

differentiate Virtualization & Cloud
by tejas_ambekar · about 5 years, 5 months ago
In reply to What is the difference between Virtualization & Cloud?
Virtualization is technology that allows you to create multiple simulated environments or dedicated resources from a single, physical hardware system. Software called a hypervisor connects directly to that hardware and allows you to split 1 system into separate, distinct, and secure environments known as virtual machines (VMs). These VMs rely on the hypervisor’s ability to separate the machine’s resources from the hardware and distribute them appropriately.
Cloud computing is a set of principles and approaches to deliver compute, network, and storage infrastructure resources, services, platforms, and applications to users on-demand across any network. These infrastructure resources, services, and applications are sourced from clouds, which are pools of virtual resources orchestrated by management and automation software so they can be accessed by users on-demand through self-service portals supported by automatic scaling and dynamic resource allocation.

Hi,
The key difference is the scale of services. Cloud offers you many services. These services differentiate a cloud from any other virtual machine. You can have access to the pre-built capabilities and start empowering your business processes straight away without worrying about creating those capabilities first.
