What is the SRS and can I remove it?

I just performed an in-place upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. I’ve noticed a service running called Microsoft Exchange Site Replication Service. They didn’t cover this is course 1572. What is that service and can
it be stopped without affecting things? Also, this leads me to another question – Do I still need to use my Exchange 5.5 Administrator program for any reason? I’ve noticed when I create a mailbox-enabled user in AD that is
shows up in the 5.5 Administrator.
