What is with the notify crap?

By ITgirli ·
Anytime I go to post, at the end I get the little notification box. Is there a way to set the default to the unchecked position? As fast as people post here, I don't want a billion emails bogging down my email account for junk mail. If I want notification, wouldn't one reason that I could just pop back over and look for it? Are we really that lazy of a people? (Apparently since I don't want to take the extra trouble to uncheck a box everytime I post) But sometimes I don't scroll to the bottom to even notice the box and then ....oops, crap in my email account. And when did this box rear it's ugly little head anyhow? I would swear that I don't remember it being there a week ago. I just scrolled down and AH! there it is again. NO. NO. NO. Could one of you guys help me eradicate the monster?

It's a single e-mail

by sMoRTy71 In reply to What is with the notify c ...

The alert e-mail is a single mail that comes every 4 hours. The mail contains all of the new posts in all of the discussions you're subscribed to.

So if you've posted in 5 threads, you see all of the new posts in each of those threads over the past 4 hours.

If there are no posts in the past 4 hours, you will get no mails.

I've found the alert mails to be a great way to keep up with a lot of threads.

Give it a try and see if you still feel the same way.

I hate it!

by M_a_r_k In reply to It's a single e-mail

I use my work email for for correspondence with TR. I do NOT want to receive all those emails, even if it is every four hours. Some discussions are very, very busy and the resulting every 4 hour email will be HUGE. If I receive all those emails, it will surely be noticed by our network support staff. (If I take a day or two off from work, you guys will likely even fill my entire email storage quota!!) In worst case the TR website will be banned from access through my corporate network. In best case, I will be reprimanded for misuse of corporate email. Either way, I lose. Please make the default to be DO NOT notify of new posts! If this nuisance persists, I will find it too annoying to post any messages at all and I will have no choice but to stop contributing to any and all TR discussions. Thank you.

I think he way saying...

That we will get one email with a list of all the discussions that we were to be notified about. as in we open the one email and there will be a list of new posts in this thread, new posts in this thread, etc. all in just one email sent every four hours. Still, it's a hassle to uncheck.

Feature vs. your e-mail use policy

by sMoRTy71 In reply to I hate it!

I'm wondering if a non-work e-mail account would solve this problem.

Most of the objections you make in your post don't have anything to do with receiving an update of discussion posts. They are about the possible violation of your company's e-mail use policy.

If you just don't like the idea of e-mail alerts to stay current on discussions you're participating in, then we will definitely take that into consideration as we evaluate the performance of this feature.

Using non-corporate email

by M_a_r_k In reply to Feature vs. your e-mail u ...

I could use non-corporate email. A small problem that would pose is that I would not receive peer emails in a timely fashion. I am unable to access personal email from work so I would not receive peer emails until the end of the day at the earliest. Same goes for the weekly notices from TR about site updates and technical news.

The main point is that I would not ever read these every 4 hour notifications of discussion activity. I keep up to date on the discussions I participate in throughout the day on my own schedule. So why would I want to receive these notifications? Also, as I previously noted, if I am unable to check my email for several days (on vacation for example), my email server space would get backlogged with tons of messages from TR (six per day, every day until the day I die).

Yes, I can uncheck the box. But if I ever forget to uncheck it, I will be forever doomed to receiving those 4-hour notifications for that discussion. Why not give us an option in our profile to specify our default as receive or not receive these notifications? Seems like a trivial matter to implement that. You can even contract with me and I'll write the code for you.

Thank you.

One more thing

by sMoRTy71 In reply to Using non-corporate email

Thanks for the feedback and I totally understand your point; however, just to clarify, you will only get an e-mail if there is a post within 4 hours.

So in order to get 6 e-mails per day until the day you die, you would have to subscribe to discussions where members posted every 4 hours.

For what it's worth, I subscribe to a bunch of threads and I don't get mails every day.

did you change your clocks, Smorty?

by gadgetgirl In reply to One more thing

Deliberately left the notifications on to gauge their usefulness to me, so decided to let them run for a while (to see how much nuisance value they had! sorry, couldn't resist!)

Mine appear to be coming through at spot-on every three hours.....

Or have I picked this up wrongly? If there is a post every four hours, I get notified every three?

Or is this just an anomaly that happens with overseas posters?

Deploys reset the clock

by sMoRTy71 In reply to did you change your clock ...

Whenever we deploy new features or fixes, the clock gets reset. We did a couple of deploys yesterday, so it could have thrown the cycle out of whack.

It should stay on the 4 hour schedule until the next one.
