What is with the notify crap?

Locked

by itgirli ·

Anytime I go to post, at the end I get the little notification box. Is there a way to set the default to the unchecked position? As fast as people post here, I don’t want a billion emails bogging down my email account for junk mail. If I want notification, wouldn’t one reason that I could just pop back over and look for it? Are we really that lazy of a people? (Apparently since I don’t want to take the extra trouble to uncheck a box everytime I post) But sometimes I don’t scroll to the bottom to even notice the box and then ….oops, crap in my email account. And when did this box rear it’s ugly little head anyhow? I would swear that I don’t remember it being there a week ago. I just scrolled down and AH! there it is again. NO. NO. NO. Could one of you guys help me eradicate the monster?

It’s a single e-mail

by smorty71 ·

In reply to What is with the notify crap?

The alert e-mail is a single mail that comes every 4 hours. The mail contains all of the new posts in all of the discussions you’re subscribed to.

So if you’ve posted in 5 threads, you see all of the new posts in each of those threads over the past 4 hours.

If there are no posts in the past 4 hours, you will get no mails.

I’ve found the alert mails to be a great way to keep up with a lot of threads.

Give it a try and see if you still feel the same way.

by m_a_r_k ·

In reply to It’s a single e-mail

I use my work email for for correspondence with TR. I do NOT want to receive all those emails, even if it is every four hours. Some discussions are very, very busy and the resulting every 4 hour email will be HUGE. If I receive all those emails, it will surely be noticed by our network support staff. (If I take a day or two off from work, you guys will likely even fill my entire email storage quota!!) In worst case the TR website will be banned from access through my corporate network. In best case, I will be reprimanded for misuse of corporate email. Either way, I lose. Please make the default to be DO NOT notify of new posts! If this nuisance persists, I will find it too annoying to post any messages at all and I will have no choice but to stop contributing to any and all TR discussions. Thank you.

That we will get one email with a list of all the discussions that we were to be notified about. as in we open the one email and there will be a list of new posts in this thread, new posts in this thread, etc. all in just one email sent every four hours. Still, it’s a hassle to uncheck.

Feature vs. your e-mail use policy

by smorty71 ·

In reply to I hate it!

I’m wondering if a non-work e-mail account would solve this problem.

Most of the objections you make in your post don’t have anything to do with receiving an update of discussion posts. They are about the possible violation of your company’s e-mail use policy.

If you just don’t like the idea of e-mail alerts to stay current on discussions you’re participating in, then we will definitely take that into consideration as we evaluate the performance of this feature.

Using non-corporate email

by m_a_r_k ·

In reply to Feature vs. your e-mail use policy

I could use non-corporate email. A small problem that would pose is that I would not receive peer emails in a timely fashion. I am unable to access personal email from work so I would not receive peer emails until the end of the day at the earliest. Same goes for the weekly notices from TR about site updates and technical news.

The main point is that I would not ever read these every 4 hour notifications of discussion activity. I keep up to date on the discussions I participate in throughout the day on my own schedule. So why would I want to receive these notifications? Also, as I previously noted, if I am unable to check my email for several days (on vacation for example), my email server space would get backlogged with tons of messages from TR (six per day, every day until the day I die).

Yes, I can uncheck the box. But if I ever forget to uncheck it, I will be forever doomed to receiving those 4-hour notifications for that discussion. Why not give us an option in our profile to specify our default as receive or not receive these notifications? Seems like a trivial matter to implement that. You can even contract with me and I’ll write the code for you. 😉

Thank you.

by smorty71 ·

In reply to Using non-corporate email

Thanks for the feedback and I totally understand your point; however, just to clarify, you will only get an e-mail if there is a post within 4 hours.

So in order to get 6 e-mails per day until the day you die, you would have to subscribe to discussions where members posted every 4 hours.

For what it’s worth, I subscribe to a bunch of threads and I don’t get mails every day.

Deliberately left the notifications on to gauge their usefulness to me, so decided to let them run for a while (to see how much nuisance value they had! sorry, couldn’t resist!)

Mine appear to be coming through at spot-on every three hours…..

Or have I picked this up wrongly? If there is a post every four hours, I get notified every three?

Or is this just an anomaly that happens with overseas posters?

Whenever we deploy new features or fixes, the clock gets reset. We did a couple of deploys yesterday, so it could have thrown the cycle out of whack.

I can not see it as a big deal either way it saves the extra step of subscribing to a discussion and after all at the most 4 e-mails per day isn’t a great deal but if you are really adversely affected then just unsubcribe for the discussions it’s as easy as that.

Why can’t the check box be marked if you want the e-mails instead of assuming you want them. It really would be simple to re-write the page and change it to be marked if you want the e-mail.

All the sites now assume you want as much e-mail as they can possibly generate. Why?

work email addresses

by jdclyde ·

In reply to I hate it!

Get yourself a yahoo/hotmail/gmail account, and use that as your registered email.

You can then set it to forward into your work mail, giving you much more control over what does and doesn’t hit your work email.

Very few EVER register with a work email address. I know I don’t.

If you want a gmail account, let me know and I can send you an “invite”.

I have multiple addresses, so I can kill any one of them if needed. Also, if I start getting spam, I will have an idea who sold my address.

So far, only spam I get is from other members wanting to share a million dollars with me. But as I have no interest in worldly posessions, I had to turn them down.

.
Since I use a Yahoo mail box for my TR emails, it’s not that big a deal. But one email every 4 hours could be 6 emails per day on a hot topic. (Or would it be 6 emails per day per discussion?)

And I don’t know if it’s intended or an oversight, but I’m not “subscribed” to some of the discussions that I get the notification for.

I tend to use the My Discussions link to glance at my discussions for updated postings, so if there was a setting for me to turn it on or off, I’d turn it off. However, I don’t really care if you keep that new feature or not, but I’ll probably uncheck it if I remember to.

Hmmm

by m_a_r_k ·

In reply to Here is a sample mail

I can see right away that that type of email may pose a problem. If it was purely technical discussions, it might be OK. However, we sometimes get out of control in the Miscellaneous discussions, as you probably know. 😀 Messages are sometimes titled with less than professional wording, with profane language. If I get too many emails with too many words like that embedded within, somebody in our network security office is likely to notice eventually.

If I do forget to uncheck the box (and I guarantee I WILL occasionally forget), and I do start receiving these 4-hour notifications for a particulary heated discussion, is there any way in the world I can disable them other than to immediately change my registered email address, and to keep it set to my personal email until the heated discussion abates? Thanks for hearing my concerns.

A couple of unsub options

by smorty71 ·

In reply to Hmmm

First of all, we’re probably going to make the subscription box unchecked.

But until then, we are doing a couple of things:
1. If you reply to the same thread, unchecking the box will unsubscribe you from the emails (of course, if you post again, you will need to uncheck the box).
2. You can go to the My Discussions page and click the “remove” link next to the thread you want to unsub from. Here is the URL to that page:

http://techrepublic.com.com/5217-6257-0.html

We are also working on a fix to the My Discussions page that will show every discussion you’re subscribed to. For some reason, that list is incomplete right now.

3. Links to My Discussions addded to email alerts
We are adding the My Discussions link to all of the alert mails so you can jump right to the page and unsub from one or more threads.

We never thought this feature would cause so many issues. Thanks for being patient as we work through it.

I think that we all have our “default” preferences for this feature. Would it be possible for you to add the default value for the checkbox to our user profiles?

The users that I program for can never agree on how they want certain things to work for which I end up giving them a user profile to manage things for themselves. In a specific application for example, I had email notifications going out to users whenever there were any changes to any employee’s status. Some users wanted an email for each employee and others wanted a list of employees in a single email. I created a user profile configuration that allowed each end-user to select which type of email they received.

I know this might be a pain but if I can manage my default notification preference, it truly becomes My TechRepublic, right?!?!?!

If you are saying things in an open discusssion forum or a blog that you think could get you fired, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

For example, what if your boss did a Google search and found your post? Or if they did an audit of the sites you visit?

As I’ve mentioned 2 or 3 times in this thread, we are going to make adjustments to the feature early next week.

Please note that those adjustments will have nothing to do with requiring members to use common sense when posting in public discussions or blogs.

by m_a_r_k ·

In reply to Not really

it’s what others say. Like the title of this discussion has a word (“crap”) that may be caught by a network scanner or email monitorer (is that a word, “monitorer”?). Google search by boss wouldn’t find anything that leads back to an individual because we don’t use full names when posting. And sometimes we post things when we’re not at work. Can’t get fired for posting inflammatory messages from home. Discussion postings show dates but no times.

• #3118710

by angry_white_male ·

In reply to It’s not what WE say

Yes – you CAN get fired for posting stuff on the internet at home. Most states are “at will” employment meaning you can be fired for just about anything. I know a couple of people who got fired for posting messages or on blogs.

My point is that I’m getting e-mail at work saying that I’ve posted in certain discussions. There’s nothing stopping someone from checking my e-mail (both me and my boss have “admin” rights in our Exchange server). If he wanted to check up on me – and saw what I had been posting – it could be the end of my job for me.

If people want that option – great. But don’t impose it upon us.

Smorty, Jay and the gang at TR go to great lengths to make this a great site. They’re always open for suggestions and feedback, and their only goal is to make this a better experience for everyone. And it’s all FREE! What a deal!

When a jerk like you spews your garbage like you just did, it hurts us all. So STFU!

You’ve already shown us all what an unprincipled a$$ you are by expressing your fear of being fired for posting here, either at the wrong times or the wrong things, or both. If you’re ashamed of what you do behind people’s back, it speaks volumes as to what kind of person you really are. And you’re even the “security guy at your company”! The night-watchman is stealing from the customer! Amazing! You claim to be on your “CEO’s list of ‘up and coming’ people”, but you should be down and going — you deserve it. I wish you worked for me so I could have the pleasure of firing you myself.

And I suggest you seek therapy for your anger issues. Your abusive father and all those police calls to your house when you were a child is obviously a big negative in your life. Having such self-admitted anger isn’t normal, nor is it healthy. Listen to your wife when she says you’re yelling, because YOU PROBABLY ARE! And your paranoid tendencies speak volumes as well. Get help, dude, before you really hurt somebody.

OK… I think I made my point by now.

I agree with what you said (the part of your message that I read, at least). Smorty and the TR crew are great about working to make this a great place. I, and I hope most TR members, appreciate their hard work and attention. And yes, it was very inappropriate for angry_white_fella to bomb this forum with umpteem repeated messages, especially when Smorty has already agreed to work on our concerns.

However, do you think you might get your point across much better if you stated it in a more dignified manner? As you can see, angry_white_guy paid attention to the tone more than the content and his response was to blast back rather than discuss your disagreement with him. Same for me. I read about two sentences of your message and pretty much scanned the rest.

Thanks.

My tone says as much as my words — maybe more. I didn’t want any misunderstanding as to what I was really saying. These guys at TR really bust their butts, of that I’m certain; and they don’t deserve any criticism whatsoever, least of all from us, and they should be addressed respectfully. If anything, I was too nice to the guy. He might think it was a flame, but it was barely a spark. (Read some of the old messages between Oz and me if you want to see real flames!)

Sorry, but I don’t believe that always playing “nice-nice” is the always best approach. And as long as I make that kind of message the exception rather than the rule, I’m just fine with it.

Obviously not someone who understands that tR has been making major site changes for about a year now. They welcome and expect such feedback from regular users so as to create a site that suits everyone’s needs. So when they come out with a new design, and they DON’T get feedback, as you so suggest, they are no farther ahead than before.

The kids that sitin teh back of the class and simply conform without opinion do not help the rest of the world progress.

If the world were full of people with no voice we’d still be pushing rocks in front of our caves to keep the sabre toothed tigers out.

Lastly, WHY would someone blacklist TR? For such a simple issue that, lo and behold, has ALREADY been fixed; thanks to those who aired thier dislike of the defaulted feature.

Read my friend, the “sent by” in these tails, not the same as the tech issues that are received, only the feed backs get blocked, unless you simply do not understand spam blocking and IT in general… and to think that you all(the respondands so far) have a job in IT. No wonder senior managers are so quick to cut jobs. To think you actually feel TR reads any of these. Get a clue, buy one, borrow one, hell steal one if you have to … but get one.

Are you implying that TR does NOT read these posts?

Just run down the list, man. Smorty works for TR and is VERY proactive on accumulating member feedback, WHICH HE HAS ALREADY RESPONDED TO AND CORRECTED! The ‘respondents’ know this and that’s why they speak out.

There is a group of TR regulars (the TR Insiders) that have a forum for discussing these rollouts and changes, sometimes these things also get posted by peers on these forums too. You clearly have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about.

As for AntiSpam, I have been specializing in SPAM removal systems (hardware and software) for many years now, I understand heuristics, aloghythms, pros and cons of white and black lists, RBLS etc very well.

Blacklisting TR email is not a ‘solution’,it’s a bandaid, a technique too often used by lazy IT staff to simply stop complaints without actually rectifying issues. The mail (if on an EXCHANGE server) would be downloaded before blocked, so it’s just going to pile a heap of crap into the BL file anyway, you’d be beter off just deleting them at the desktop.

RECTIFYING the issue IS the best way to solve this, not working around it. Also If you had noticed before you spewed, this problem HAS been fixed by the attentive TR staff members that DO read these boards and participate in discussions with us. No more default checkbox, problem solved, PROPERLY.

Next time, just think for a minute before running off on some bizarre tangent and spouting your completely unqualified opinion about TR’s staff , forums and peers.

I apologies to the TR staff for having to read such grap. As for unqualified, I took the first computer course in the country offered in High school on FORTRAN and cobal, grad in 1969… since then I been shaking my head at most IT people thinking “what in the world is wrong with these folks” I came to the conclusion that they think they know it all. AND they insist on correcting every little thing, most of which is absolutely none of there business. (used the wrong there on purpose, because that’s what I mean, as I point to the bottom of your used toilet)See how funny I am when you use your brain for something other than being a fool! Your mother is not proud? I point to the bottom of the toilet? What kind of a farce of a rant is that intended to be? 🙂

I knew you wouldn’t see what I meant by unqualified, it’s a term many people don’t relate to outside of tehchnical qualification. I was not talkng about your IT ability or eperience at all. I meant UNQUALIFIED to comment on how TR staff wouldn’t read the post and that others were just wasting thier time.

A TR staff member has been VERY active in this thread and because this thread was started, the issue has been fixed(see SMORTY’s comment below) Yes, there is a notify box on the page, BUT, it used to have a check in it by default. This would mean that every time you post, or edit a post, you had to UNCHECK the box in order to not get emails every 6 hours.

Perhaps you understand what this topic is about now, you have proven yourself to be completely clueless of the issue at hand in your last post.

Others were ALL posting here to have the TR staff remove the default checkmark from that box (which has been done thanks to thier proactive attention to the community)and YOUR only comment was that they were wasting thier time and should just use a bandaid resolution instead because TR doesn’t read these posts. In which case you were entirely wrong, completely incorrect and 100% unqaulified to speak on the matter, especially in a condescending post implying people were dumb for addressing the issue and just dealing with it themselves.

Get it now? I would assume not.

The only time you will see a pre-checked box is when you are posting to a discussion that you are already subscribed to.

In that case, if you uncheck the box when posting, you will be unsubscribed after you submit your post.

Also, we added a direct link to the My Discussions page from the e-mail and we’ve included all subscribed discussions (in order of when they were started) to everyone’s My Discussions page.

YES, there is a notify box, BUT it no longer has a checkmark in it by DEFAULT. Man, how dense can you be?

There WAS a default check, so unless you unchecked it, you would get email notification every 6 hours, this is BRAND new for TR and pissed off a lot of long time peers who didn’t want an extra step.

NOW, as happily explained above by TR staff member SmOrTy, there is NO default checkmark in that box. So, god this is tiring, if you WANT to get notification you can, but….if you don’t want to get it, the box isn’t checked by default.

It’s almost like a company sending you magazines and then a bill if you don’t return or cancel the order that you hadn’t placed to begin with, which incidentally is illegal in Canada.

In reply to What is with the notify crap?

Since I am unemployed as of July 2005, When I started participated in the threads, I would get these notification e-mails. In Outlook, that keeps me informed of the reminder of my posted threads.

I am not so sure about you, but I would write to the TechRepublic regarding this phenomenon.
