    by Mamata Bhushapogu ·

With so many advancements in phone technology happening so quickly, I’m curious about the latest trends we should be keeping an eye on. It feels like every year, new features are making our phones faster, smarter, and more intuitive. Whether it’s Android lock screen widgets, new AI capabilities, there’s always something new. What are the top trends you think are worth paying attention to right now?

For reasons we just update when the phone gets old. I get a new Pixel, my brother gets his iPhone.

It is to hard to accurately predict such things. We can keep an eye out for new trends but there it is difficult to know with any certainty.

I liken it to when the iPhone was first introduced. Steve Jobs did a fantastic job convincing cell phone users that he had a device that nobody knew they actually needed and did so effectively. Apple as a technology-oriented company has been very successful doing so and making very profitable choices along the way. Kind of ironic that I started out with an APPLE home computer in 1977 but never owned an iPhone even after they first introduced.

Back to the OP’s question, I do predict that satellite technology for cell phone is in its infancy but we will see new innovations in the next few to several years. I just can’t fathom what it will be introduced yet.

Absolutely! Some exciting trends right now include foldable phones, smarter AI integration, and next-level camera tech. 5G is also expanding, offering faster speeds. Phones are getting more intuitive and powerful every year!

The software (apps) are only intuitive if you are used to it. Even mastering the basics of Whatsapp (like replying to a message, understanding the difference between a chat and a message, deleting messages, or sending a message to a new phone number) aren’t intuitive for a first time user. I see many (older) people asking for help at our public library.

And, for example, I fail to see what’s “intuitive” in making a screenprint in Android: “Press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time. If that doesn’t work, press and hold the Power button for a few seconds. Then tap Screenshot”. And then presumably I need to download a photo editor first and learn to use it if I want to select the part of the screen I’m interested in. Here on my Windows keyboard is a key labeled “Print Screen” that lets me select the part of the screen I want to use. That’s easy and understandable. Phones aren’t.

Personally, I think I can do less than 50% of what my children can. While I could do everything with my first mobile phone 25 years ago.
