The first priority is to remove the virus.
Then google BEST ANTIVIRUS 2021 and pick your choice from sites that compare at least 10 (to exclude the spammy sites that only say they themselves are the best, don’t believe those).
Many people here are happy with only using Windows Defender, but it seems you need more.

I haven’t seen a virus at the office or home for as long as I remember.

Yes, clients occasionally bring in one but more common is malware and ransomware.
But security software usually isn’t the answer as all clients have admitted they helped the bad thing install.

For malware I use Malwarebytes and for Internet Privacy and Security using Ivacy.

is your laptop yours as a personal laptop or one provided by your business/organization? If it’s personal then yes agree with malwarebytes. if it is for your organization then your IT department should be sorting out the antivirus. You can try something like the suggestion below and look for best antivirus – not in google but from actual independent review places such as Getapp.com gartner.com or capterra.com

Can you tell us what you think makes such “best”?

I continue to find the definition of best to be elusive.
Also, not one of the Windows Antivirus suites is perfect. Most of what I see today is the owner installing the malware/virus/trojan/etc. by force or disabling the antivirus during install.
Do you remember Dave?
