What the...? Adobe Reader 9 install starts with SAP Interactive Excel?

By CharlieSpencer ·
I've downloaded the Adobe Reader 9 installation program from Adobe's web site (appx. 35 meg).

When I attempt to run the install, the first thing that happens is an installation of something called 'SAP Interactive Excel' (hereafter called SAP I E). Usually this install complains because the client doesn't have 'Excel 8.0' (which I assume is Excel 2007), continues with the SAP I E, then finishes with the Reader 9 installation.

In today's case the SAP I E install stops with an 'unable to register files; files may be able to register after reboot' error. Reader 9 installation never starts. Rebooting makes no difference; restarting the install starts the SAP I E sequence again.

The client systems are all Windows XP Pro SP3, with Office 2003 SP2 (including Excel), SAP R3 client 640 final release, patch 21, and Adobe Reader 8. I'm removing 8 and rebooting before I attempt to install 9.

Does anybody know what SAP I E is, why Adobe 9 apparently triggers it's installation, and how to install 9 without installing SAP I E?

Thanks.

I have not had that issue... but Have you tried to install in "safe mode"? I also came across this, their might be a stepping method of installing http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

I read through adobe posts, apparently the install uninstalls 8 then reinstalls 9... so removing 8 should work....

Safe Mode doesn't make any difference. Maybe you got something different from the link, but it just took me to a page where I could choose between Reader 8 and Reader 9.

for the Acrobat.com PDF maker program?
Maybe if the site is blocked, then it cannot connect and finish the install?

Hmm, some things to look into when time frees up.

What Acrobat PDF maker program? I'm not installing the PDF creation program, just the PDF reader. I downloaded the install program directly from Adobe's site to the desktop, so I don't what portion of the site could be blocked.

This when run will ask you to install an activex control for a download manager. It will then remove version 8 and automatically install version 9. The PC will require a restart and I was asked if I wanted to update flash player.

Here is information on 'SAP Interactive Excel'

I uninstalled the SAP client, installed Adobe Reader 9 without any flack, then reinstalled the SAP client.
