What to charge clients

By tdol40 ·
When you arrive at a clients place of business or home to do something simple like setting up a new PC and connecting to a network or set up a peer-to-peer with 3 or 4 machines and suddenly something weird happens (like error 624 on W2k) that causesyou to go into a major learning curve to correct and get back on track, should you eat this time, or continue your charges as normal?

My education isn't paid by my clients.

I have run into this same situation, at the time I reach the impasse, off the clock I go, when I reach the point where I am again "on track", then I go back on the clock. If I later find out that it was a customer caused issue I will explain that to the customer & offer to discount the time @ 50/50. If it was something I just needed to learn, then I eat it & chock it up to a needed learning experience. Trust is something gained and I just won't violate that trust w/ my clients.
