Where is HAL?

I remember when I first saw Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey and was very impressed with HAL computer back in 1968. I had dreams about sitting in front of the computer and talking with a HAL like interface…looking forward to the real year 2001. Well it has come and passed but no HAL on my high end PC. It is is now almost 2007 and so what ever happen to the progress of AI and the HAL interface?
