Get some print copies of major computer publications & the Sunday editions of major metropolitan newspapers in your region. What types of programming languages are they asking for?

You may find that what companies NEED has very little resemblance to what kinds of new languages are being promoted.

A related issue is that we all need to specialize ... business, scientific, system is too general ... even more specific ... are you a chemical engineer, an expert on ERP, a business analyst, ordo you want to be one ... you need to know the subject matter applications that you are writing the software about to be good at it.

I have been a programmer since the 1960's & in my experience the dominant need has been competence in particular packages ... a company buys a collection of some tens of thousands of individual programs with millions of lines of code that are designed to work in a team effort, then they want a programmer to "improve" that collection & the only person who need apply for the job is s

There is a market right now for people who are proficient programming web interfaces with legacy packages, but I do not know how long it will last due to the growth in packages to automate the connection process.

You specifeid that you have some programming skills. So you can learn JAVA easily. JAVA is very much useful for to-days technology. You can develop any application using JAVA. There is no time limit to learn. It depends on your hardwork. It takes atleast 4 months you get into track of JAVA if you are sincere enough.

I have to agree with everything posted so far; you need to know what you are going to do, i.e., what business, and Java is the current wave. I just went through a re-org in the consulting organization I belong to, and no longer is just Oracle PL/SQL and Developer the thing. I have to know Java, esp. the JDeveloper tool kit.

I was involved in a scoping project recently for an exchange, and the "basic" architecture was somthing wild! But, it all hinged together using Java and message brokering.

Another thing you need to seriously consider is SQL. All major projects require data access of some description; not just painting pretty screens. The most accepted method of accessing and manipulating data, especially business data, is SQL.

Learn Visual BASIC. This language is used in so many places today (from Access and MS Office to more complicated custom software development) that it is the surest one-stop tool to have as a programmer.

In addition to checking the classifieds to see what languages and skills are being asked for, note what TYPES of companies are asking for these skills. Do you want to work in private industry? As a consultant? At a software development house?

After acquiring some fundamental skillsat a language such as VB, look for projects that you might get involved in. If you take a class at a JC, for example, ask your instructor if he/she has a project that you might get some experience on. Develop programs that might help you or othersat your current job, even if they're done after hours. The experience of developing something and putting it to work is invaluable.

You probably have a year or so to go before you develop sufficient skill in an area to be considered programming material. But stick
