Why Can't I access global addr. book

By zis3g7r ·
I am employing Outlook 97 on a Windows 2000 Pro
client and using Exchange 5.5 on a Windows NT 4 Server.
When I returned to work last Monday, one of our client PC's was no longer running properly (HP Vectra 400vi PIII 1000MHz 256MB). HW diagnosticsrevealed no hardware failure. I re-installed Windows 2k Pro via an update and slapped on the service pack release 2 for a good measure. Now the pc and all applications are running again, e x c e p t for the Microsoft Exchange services. When I try to connect to the user's mail box on the Exchange server, I get a message telling me, that the global address book can't be accessed.
This problem occurs only on this specific pc.
Thanks for any advice!

Ping the PC from the server ping IP address -t and check if there are packet drops. This seems like a netwotk related problem. Try starting from checking the Ethernet card on the PC and then the throughput between the client PC and ther server, network cable on all network related diagnostics.

ALSO. There might be a mailbox SID corruption in this case. First using your admin privileges call up the user's mailbox in your outlook (using the Tools menu => services = > properties => advanced tab => add) and export the content of the user's mailbox to a 'PST' file. Then delete the mailbox from the server. Recreate the mailbox with the same properties and import the previously created 'PST' file back into the newly created mailbox.

You might also take a look at the Event logs on the Exchange Server. Look for any stop errors occurring during the scheduled maintenance periods for Exchange. I had a similar problem that looked like it only affected one or two people until workstations were restarted and then the problem became more wide spread. A simple reboot of the server rebuilt the database and log files and everything was OK.
