Why can't I move or copy files in Win98S

By sundale5 ·
I used to be able to, but I upgraded to the latest browser(IE5 SP1, I believe?) a week ago using Windows Update. Now I cannot copy or move any file in Explorer. Cold shutdown doesn't help; neither does clearing the cache or RAM; and deleting all files in the clipboard doesn't help.
If I Ctrl+X, the file icon fades indicating that it has been "picked up", but when I try to paste to another folder, I get "Illegal function" and "Internet Explorer internal error; close and restart" messages andExplorer closes.

Also, my folder options are now permanently in the "View as Web Page" mode.

I uninstalled IE5 and Win98SE indicated that the previous version of IE had been reinstalled, but my problems persist.

Did you do the other updates such as JAVA and ActiveX updates?
If you didn't, you should. If you did it, select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Seelct all the apply and select all the options for JAVA.
No promises, but it might help you.
Also, open My Computer, selct Tools, Folder Options and browse around to find the configuration you want out your system browser.

Good luck!

Why don't you try copying and pasting with Windows Explorer, which is not the same as IE?

To change your folders to standard mode, click on My Computer/View/Folder Options and select Classic Style in the General tab. Next, go to the View tab and click "Remember each folder's view setting".

Go to system information then to tools and
run ei repaire tool. Perhaps that will fix
your problem. Make sure nothing is running
in the background.
