Why didn't MS notify us about this? I was expecting continued support

By officerbill ·
MS has ceased licensing Windows 3.
I was wondering why Microsoft Updates wasn't showing anything for my Packard-Bell

"On 1 November Microsoft stopped issuing licences for the software that made its debut in May 1990 in the US."

You're joking, right?

Gods, why would anybody outside a few niche applications care?

Having said that, you can still legally install W3 if you absotively, posilutely have to. MS's licensing policy has long been that if you purchase a license for any current version of Windows, you can legally substitute any previous comparable version of the OS. In short, you can legally install and run W3 if you purchase a license for a newer flavor of Windows (2K, XP, V, etc). Mind you, you can't legally also install that newer version, just the older one.

Niche application solutions

I do a few small businesses on the side. One is an incredibly hard headed, stuck in his ways accountant. He does not wish to change his financial data spreadsheet thing-a-ma-bob that he's used since win 3.1. I've griped about security as well as newer, easier to use software. He still refuses to change and he pays well, so what do I care? I've informed him that I am not legally responsible for ANY lost or compromised data and it's in my contract. Since he agreed to the contract (my only moonlighting customer with a written agreement) I installed DOSbox and his program works fine even under my test vista business 64 box.

Actually I was under the impression that they were through with it years ago. I really do have a Packard-**** with W3 on it, but I haven't started it in 2 or 3 years and a couple of sets of installation floppies.
The announcement just brought back memories that suddenly made me feel old, that's all.
