I have this ancient HP/Compaq R3000 which has 802.11b only and if I want that to work I have to enable 802.11b in the router.
There may be other reasons such as someone set the router to only allow known devices.
Tell more about the machines, the router setup so we can give more ideas.

Its just a typical set up. The router sits in the living room emitting wifi through the house. The laptop just doesn’t receive the WiFi from the new router

What modem/router ? What is the make/model of your laptop ? Is this a new issue or has it been ongoing ? Did you make any recent hardware or software changes ? Do other devices connect ? What version of the operating systemis is your laptop using and is it up to date? Have you confirmed that the modem/router is working properly ? Did you move the location of the modem/router recently ? Have you power cycled all devices yet ?
We can’t assume what the issue is unless you confirm what you are using in more detail.

Thanks for the questions. I did just change my wifi. I changed the router… That’s it. My Dell (5yrs old) was getting wifi from my old router but not the new one. But it picks up other wifi. My dell laptop uses Windows 10. And I power cycled everything . Also, the router is working perfectly!

Hello,
Are other devices recognizing your home wifi?
I will suggest to please reset your laptop wireless card, and do a factory reset
for your wi-fi router. Moreover, also try to upgrade the firmware on your router. -

Go into Device Manager > Network adapter > right click on the wireless driver > choose uninstall > restart. Test again. At this point, if you still cannot “see” the home network, but you can see others and connect like you were previously, the next step to check wifi drivers in your laptop.
Hope you got your answer.

Enable the WiFi service with the WiFi switch (First of all, make sure you are within the WiFi network range while you are following the steps below.) Some laptops, such as HP, Lenovo, Dell, have a switch or a key on your keyboard to turn on/off WiFi (like Fn+F5). Check the switch or keys and turn your WiFi service on. if this method is not working then you should try the second method mentioned below.
Check your network settings
If you don’t have the WiFi switch on your laptop or computer, you can check it in your system.1) Right-click the Internet icon, and click Open Network and Sharing Center.
2) Click Change adapter settings.
3) Right-click WiFi, and click Enable. Note: if it has enabled, you will see Disable when right-clicking on WiFi (also referred to as Wireless Network Connection in different computers).
4) Restart your Windows and reconnect to your WiFi again.
I hope these both methods will help you for resolving your problem. -

Make sure your computer/device is still in the range of your router/modem. Move it closer if it is currently too far away. Go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, and check the wireless settings. Double check your Wireless Network Name and SSID is not hided.
