Why does my screen appear small in Linux

By anz ·
I have Red hat linux 7.1 installed on my celeron 300 with 128mb RAM. my video card is from a company called Perx (closed down a year and a half ago). i installed x specifying generic VGA compatible device. but now when gnome starts the screen size is about a quarter of my monitor, the desktop size is huge, i don't have drivers for my video card and since the company is closed, i can't get them. What do i do? i can't do a thing in linux.

Why does my screen appear small in Linux

Hi anz,

You'll have to do a little research on the type of graphics chipset that your video card uses as well as the amount of onboard memory it has. I did a quick search on the web and found a Perx card that uses the S3 Virge chipset. The documentation that came with the card or system should have this information. If you don't have any docs, you can look at the card itself and see if the chip is labeled (ATI Rage, S3, etc.) Once you determine the chipset, you can select the appropriate driver and amount of memory.

Good luck,

Mike
