    by tylerm17 ·

I am trying to move my OS from a 2tb hard drive to a 500gb SSD with Macrium Reflect. When i try to move it to the SSD it says the OS file is 1.17 tb and wont fit on my SSD. Even when i watch videos on how to do it their OS is only like 30-40 gb. Can someone please help

An OS isn’t a partition and it isn’t file. It’s a few disk sectors, some files in the root folder, some other folders (either whole or a number of subfolders) on the drive that contains the c:-partition. A common instance a Windows OS a few years old is some 40 to 50 GB.

      Two good options:
      – Copy the full 1.17 TB to a 2 GB SSD
      – Do a clean install of Windows, drivers and programs to that SSD (first disconnect the HDD). Then delete those from the hard disk because they aren’t needed there any more. Then you have a nice situation of the OS on an SSD and your data on a HDD.

There are many priors to this question so I can’t guess why your specific install is that much.

      1. Due to recent W10 updates, did you clean off old versions of Windows?
      Read https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/delete-your-previous-version-of-windows-f8b26680-e083-c710-b757-7567d69dbb74

      2. You have big apps installed. Uninstall when needed.

      3. You have some collection of files in your home folders.
