Why is spacebar powering on the computer?

By Tink! ·
The computer I brought home from work for my kids to use is able to be powered on by just hitting the spacebar - even after a proper shut down and power is off.

The computer is an HP Vectra and used to have WinNT but I installed Win 98 SE.

I don't know if this situation has been there since I installed Win98 as this discovery was only just made recently thanks to the cat who has taken to lying on the keyboard.

I do not want the spacebar to power on the computer, how do I change this?

Check the BIOS

by mjd420nova In reply to Why is spacebar powering ...

There is a selection in the BIOS for assigning a HOT key to turn the machine on. It can be set to just about any key, and I guess that it is set for the spacebar. I prefer to have NONE, and you have to ust the front panel switch. Check the BIOS.

Agreed, The Bios has the setting

There will be a section in the BIOS to allow or disable booting the system, powering it on, or waking it.

the ONLY technical question I actually knew the answer to and everyone else beat me to it.

For a minute there, I very nearly upgraded to gadgetgirl (3)

Oh, well, I can still dream....

And Tink - as regards the cat - get it a gel keyboard rest, they prefer those, mine used to get kneaded on a daily basis!

Don't forget to give the thumbs up to mjd!

Edited for reminder!

Right now, I could use that cat in here! Is he for hire?

(Dippy Tart Boss + Double Dippy Tart Assistant Director = one extremely frustrated GG)

But - I've got half-day-itis, I'm outta here in around 15 minutes for a jump start on the weekend!

WooooooHooooooo!

Have a good one, all!

She's far from it actually. She's the B&W kitten (that got caught on the door- from a prev post) we kept from our outdoor cat and is right there when we come downstairs in the morning, seeking attention or a lap.

She's also starting to get fat. She's definitley a spoiled little cat!
