Why such long pauses?

By GrahamEngland ·
I recently reformatted my hard drives and installed XP from fresh. I love the OS, but after a week or so I started getting long pauses (about 5 seconds) when I start up just about any new window (for example, Windows Explorer). The strange thing is that I have an NT4 and a Win2K PC at work, and the Win2K PC performs the same way. My machine at home should be good enough for XP (AMD Athlon XP1700+, 60GB HDD with about 50GB free, 256MB RAM). Any suggestions please? I never had this trouble with Win98 on the PC beforehand.
