Why won't WinXP install after removing Vista RC1

By TechPro34yrs. ·
You Guys are my last hope, Microsoft was no help.
Have a one year old 64-Bit Computer. Rec'd my Vista RC1 32, DVD in the mail and loaded it on my 64-bit PC. Everything went perfect until I noticed that I couldn't use the Internet. After hours of research found out that the Motherbd maker has discontinued this Motherbd and there are no Vista drivers for the nForce-250 network controller for the on-board Nic card. So, I uninstalled Vista RC1 and tried to reinstall my Windows XP Pro and now I get an error that states "Error loading Operating System" just after "Boot from CD" and of course WinXP setup will not take off after the PC restarts from pre-setup.
Tried all the obvious tricks- Reformatted HD, fdisk from Win95 Boot floppy, even downloaded hard drive utility program to make sure the HD was clean but PC still also says another OS still resides along with Error Loading OS.
Haven't been this upset in years and fear I've lost my 64-bit machine to RC1.
Please, does anyone, know of a solution to get me back to WinXP since Vista dumped on me? I'll be very greatful.

Download Boot & Nuke from here

Then go to the BIOS and short out the Pins to clear it completely or remove the CMOS Battery and leave for at least 30 minutes with the unit unplugged.

Clearly there is something written to the HDD that is making the XP Installer think that there is a newer OS already installed and will not allow the installation to proceed.

You should also check the Date in BIOS as well as if that is wrong and has defaulted back to it's original opening date this could prevent the installation of XP if it is currently showing something like 1999 instead of some time latter than 2001.

just fixed same problem

I just had the same problem w/ trying to uninstall Vista from new laptop, then do a clean install of XP SP2. After weeks of frustration, got the fix from HP support:

Boot into the BIOS
Change HD(SATA native, in my case)setting to DISABLE
Put in XP disk and press any key when it says to "boot from CD"
NOW it should allow you to format(reformat)a primary partition w/NTFS and install XP Pro.

NOTE: Since my switch to XP Pro, I'm having a little driver trouble, b/c some XP drivers can't recognize newest HW. Suggest you print out a HW report like Belarc Advisor, so you'll have an exact list if XP doesn't recognize.

Good luck,
Martha

Just about every time I have heard of this, it has been because of XP's failure to recognize the SATA hard drive. If you have a SATA drive reset the bios so XP will see it and your install should go without a problem!!!
