Wierd printer problem

By sidvail ·
Hi all,

Server 2003 with XP Pro workstations. Everyone on the same workgroup.

On station 1, I hook up a Dell Laser printer and share it. I install that shared printer on stations 2-10. All is fine. Printer is online and ready. I print test pages from all stations. Stations 2-8 no problem. Last 2 stations say all is well, but the dialog box to say "OK, it printed" just sits there for ever. No print, no problems, just sits there. If I reboot Station 1, those 2 test pages print after booting. If I do not reboot, you cannot cancel those jobs from Station 9-10. They just sit there. Try to delete the jobs, they stay there forever. I have to reboot Station 1 to free it all up.

Any ideas? I've turned off the firewall on Station 1, reinstalled the printer several times, checked security, sharing, etc. I have no idea how or what is wrong.

Thanks in advance.

You may have already

Done this but network the printer. If it dose not have a network plug use a jet direct device. Sharing a device on a network is problematic at best. If you can not add a network card to the printer the cost of good printers is low. I would buy a good printer that can have its own IP address and use the server as a print server so you can let every one use it. I was going to do the same thing on a contract job but ran into too many sharing problems with XP and server 2000.

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in "Technical Q&A," not in "Discussions."

Please re-post there.

Thank you.
