Win 2000 and WinXP don't see each other

By zitap123 ·
The windows 2000 computer does not see the Windows XP computer with their bios names
\\computerA but do see each other with their IP addresses \\198.62.10.3

tcp/ip has been removed and reinstalled on each computer. Network card removed and reinstalled on each computer.

Each is able to go on the internet via cable and comcast.net. But in My Network Places they don't see each other and when we use their names they don't see each other. We can access and map drives but only with the TCP/IP address.

Ping only works with the IP address. What is going on? Help!

If you can not ping using the bios names, as long as the workgroup/domain name is the same, then it can not resolve the host name.

You will find in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
a file called hosts. Make a copy first as a backup and then open the file using notepad.

Now enter at the bottom the ip address followed by the name of the computer you wish to access. eg

198.62.10.3 #MachineBiosName

Now press Ctrl+S to save the file.

Your computer should now be able to resolve the ip address.

Hope this helps
