Win 95 can't recognize cd-rom drive.

By mbatko ·
How can I change the system configuration so that Win95 recognizes the cd-rom drive again? Apparently the settings were changed so the computer can't recognize the driver.

Try un-installing the drive, then restart your comp and it will probably find the drive. If not try re-installing it manually

First thing is to find the a CDROM Driver for your cdrom. Copy the file to your c drive.

Edit config.sys

device=c:\cddrv.sys /d:mscd000 (cddrv.sys is your cdrom driver.

Edit Autoexec.bat

c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /d:mscd000

if you can not find the mscdex.exe do a search of your system.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure you have the most updated driver for your CD rom? Go to the manufacturers site and download the latest driver, or assuming you can't access windows or the web, then borrow a computer and put the driver on floppy or have someone do it for you. If you can get your hands on a 98 startup disk, it has most of the big manufacturers cd rom drivers already built in! Just make sure you have mscdex in the pc as well. Good luck!

This may or may not be your problem, but scan for viruses. There are know viruses that prevent Windows from recognizing CD-ROM drives.
