Win 98 Registry Problem

By JodyJ ·
When I try to run regedit from either the run line or the .exe file, my computer starts opening up multiple windows of garbage characters and the screen turns solid gray. I can end task on all the windows regedit opened listed in Task Manager as EEEEEEEEEE..., but still have to reboot to regain control. Any ideas?

Sounds like something has a grip on your system.
Have you run a decent AntiVirus program?
try AVG free edition from instead of Norton or McAffee.
Secondly, export a copy of the registry and rename the existing copy to regeditOld.exe or something like it, then try running System File Checker "sfc.exe" from the run command and it will replace regedit.exe

try booting to SAFE mode and then run it...
if you still get all the garbage, boot from a clean floppy/CD with any current version of a antivirus program and keep your fingers crossed
