Win 98 SE installtion on a Win98 OS

By gmchoong ·
Is there a switch that may be used to install Win98 SE (full version) on a Win98 system, would like to keep existing settings & apps.

Make a Win98 bootdisk. Boot from the disk (make sure to load CD-ROM support). Rename C:\Windows\win.com to C:\windows\win.old, then insert your CD and reun setup.

Hi,

I'm a little unsure as what you actually want to di is, but you can update your W98 to W98se just by sticking the CD rom into the CD player.

The CD will launch asking if you want to upgrade. If you upgrade your only concern will be legacydrivers that might not be supported but everything else stys the same. In other words W98SE will only substitute older versions of the OS not format the drive(unless you do a clean install).

I've updated several W98's this way no problem, but make sure you have drivers for your devices that support W98SE just in case.

As a final note, it might be a good idea to update your BIOS before upgrading as well as making a backup of your machine prior to upgrading.

Good luck and have fun!

Follow-on to answer#2. When the Win98SE CD starts, it will scan the harddrive and see that you have an existing version of WinXX. It will then ask you if you want to upgrade or start new. If you want to save your settings, you must select UPGRADE!!!
